Private Pilot License Explained

Continuing our driver's license analogy, the next step past a driver's permit is the standard drivers license.  In the state of Missouri, this would be considered a class “F” license.  When a new driver receives this license, it allows them to drive certain automobiles under certain conditions as the sole operator of that vehicle – in other words, they no longer need a licensed driver ride with them to coach them along.   But having a standard driver's license does not allow you to get paid to drive a vehicle, nor can you operate large vehicles such as a tractor trailer.  You can simply drive a vehicle to get yourself and your friends and family to various places.  You could not charge someone, though, for your services.  This is much the same with the Private Pilot Certificate.  A new private pilot is allowed to fly for personal enjoyment in certain types of aircraft.  There are a few exceptions to this, but that's a story for another day.

A standard driver's license allows you to operate certain vehicles.  A new driver could operate a car in accordance with that license, but they could not operate a motorcycle.  For that they would need a motorcycle license.  This is true with pilot certificates too.  If a pilot receives a certificate to fly a helicopter (rotorcraft), they can only fly helicopters.  If a pilot receives a certificate to fly fixed wing aircraft (airplanes), they can only fly fixed wing aircraft.
