Helicopter Pilot's License - Student's Certificate

Pilot Certificates work in much the same way as driver's licenses. By way of comparison, in Missouri there are different types of drivers licenses; classes “A” through “F”, with several different types of endorsements, or permissions.  The first stage is the driver's permit.  With a driver's permit, the new driver is allowed to operate a car so long as they are with an experienced, licensed driver in order to learn the skills necessary to operate that vehicle, understand the rules of the road, learn the laws, etc.

This is also true in the aircraft world with the Student Pilot Certificate, both for helicopter and fixed wing aircraft.  This certificate allows a new pilot to learn the helicopter or airplane, learn the air laws, and experience flight with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) showing them the ropes.  The main difference, however, is a new airplane or helicopter student does not need to obtain a Student Pilot Certificate before making their first flight.  They only need the Student Pilot Certificate prior to making their first solo flight.  We highly recommended, though, that students obtain their Student Pilot Certificate early on in their helicopter flight training.  We will discuss the reasons for getting your certificate early in the process in a future post.
