Commercial Pilot's Certificate Explained

If a new driver wants to get paid to drive, they would have to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, or a CDL.  This requires a higher degree of skill and proficiency at driving, including knowledge of commercial road laws, and safety of the occupants that are paying for the service.  Once a driver receives a CDL they can now get paid to drive, but they are still limited on what they can drive.  For example, a driver with a CDL cannot pull more than one trailer at a time unless they receive an endorsement stating they had training to to allow them to do this.  This is called a “Double/Triple Trailer” endorsement. To carry more than 16 passengers, a “Passenger Transport” endorsement is required.  Missouri has eight different endorsements for a CDL driver, other states have different requirements.

A pilot too will be required to obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate to be paid for their flying services.  Just like with a CDL, this certificate limits the type of aircraft and the type of operation the pilot is allowed to fly.  In the helicopter world, several endorsements exist including “high performance” aircraft or “complex” aircraft.   There are different ratings in aviation that apply to a pilot allowing them to operate in different conditions.  Helicopters have an 'Instrument Rating' and a 'Greater Than 12,000 Pound Rating'.  Both of these ratings can be added to the pilot's certificate, allowing that pilot to either operate in what are known as Instrument Flight Conditions (flying within the clouds) or operate large utility aircraft.

Other pilot's endorsements include Part 135, or charter pilot endorsement, and Part 137, agricultural applicator endorsement.
