HeliSat’s Helicopter Flight School Training program:
  • 39 lessons over a 13-18 week period*
  • Times are flexible around the student’s availability for flying

Helicopter Flight School Training Course Objectives

Gives the helicopter student the necessary aeronautical knowledge and meets the prerequisites specified in FAR Part 61 for the FAA private pilot oral test and check flight. Take with a qualified Helicopter Ground Training program to prepare for FAA Private Pilot’s license written exam.

Flight School Training Course Completion Standards
Students demonstrate through oral tests and practical demonstrated flying skills they meet the prerequisites specified to take the FAA private pilot flying test.

Stages of Helicopter Flight School Training **
HeliSat’s Flight School Training program is divided into three stages.

  • Stage 1 (Lessons 1-17) - Preparation for solo flying requirements and beginning some advanced maneuvers.
  • Stage 2 (Lessons 18-29) - Instruction in advanced maneuvers in preparation for off-airport operations. Improvement of piloting skills with solo practice.
  • Stage 3 (Lessons 30-39) - Maneuvers and procedures necessary for a cross-country flight. Learn operations within the ATC environment and develop skills necessary for solo flights to unfamiliar airports. Preparation for FAA flight check.

At the conclusion of each stage, students are required to demonstrate their knowledge by satisfactorily passing a check flight administered by their HeliSat Flight School instructor.


HeliSat Helicopter Flight School Lesson Plan
Lesson 1 Introduction to the training helicopter and proper preflight inspection. Understanding safety precautions and awareness training required by SFAR 73 prior to taking the flight controls.
Lesson 2 Review procedures needed to gain proficiency in the use of flight controls.
Lesson 3 Continuation of proficiency in basic flight maneuvers and introduction to airport environment.
Lesson 4 Flight maneuvers review and instruction on crosswinds that affect maneuvers.
Lesson 5 Basic maneuvers practice with concentration on hovering.
Lesson 6 Continuation of basic maneuvers practice.
Lesson 7 Practice pre-solo maneuvers and introduction to maximum performance takeoffs and steep approaches.
Lesson 8 Concentration on takeoffs, approaches, and hovering maneuvers.
Lesson 9 Overall review of areas learned and additional work in areas that need improvement.
Lesson 10 Additional work on areas of weakness and introductions to autorotations.
Lesson 11 Review and practice of pre-solo maneuvers and introduction to systems and equipment malfunctions.
Lesson 12 Continued practice on autorotations and introduction to low rotor rpm issues and resolution.
Lesson 13 Review and practice of pre-solo maneuvers.
Lesson 14 Introduction to 180 degree autorotations and effects of turns during autorotative descents.
Lesson 15 Continued practice of pre-solo maneuvers concentrating on takeoffs, approaches and autorotations.
Lesson 16 Review and practice of pre-solo maneuvers to prepare for student's first supervised solo & RHC safety checkout.
Lesson 17 Review of student's proficiency of maneuvers and procedures to determine if student is ready for first solo flight.
Lesson 18 Review and pre-solo requirements check of student's readiness for solo flight. Conduct first supervised solo flight.
Lesson 19 Review of takeoff, traffic pattern, and approach procedures. Conduct second supervised solo flight.
Lesson 20 Practice pre-solo maneuvers preparing for third supervised solo flight.
Lesson 21 Practice maneuvers to increase proficiency and confidence in solo flight.
Lesson 22 Introduction to off-airport operations in confined areas and understanding hazards associated with off airport operations.

Lesson 24 Maneuvers practice to increase proficiency and solo experience.
Lesson 25 Review of off-airport operations in confined areas and running landings.
Lesson 26 Introduction to special considerations and characteristics of helicopter flight at night.
Lesson 27 Practice maneuvers assigned by the instructor to increase proficiency and solo experience.
Lesson 28 Review of all Stage 2 maneuvers in preparation for Stage 2 flight check.
Lesson 29 Flight check for advanced maneuvers and off-airport operations.
Lesson 30 Introduction to helicopter cross-country planning and procedures. Consists of at least two legs using pilotage and dead reckoning.
Lesson 31 Further understanding of cross-country operations and emergency procedures for first solo cross-country flight. The flight is three legs using pilotage, dead reckoning and radio navigation.
Lesson 32 Familiarization with night cross-country procedures. 50 nm distance, emphasizes pilotage in night environment.
Lesson 33 First solo cross-country flight.
Lesson 34 Further training of cross-country flight operations. Longer course than first solo cross-country flight.
Lesson 35 Longer cross-country flight, landings at three airports.
Lesson 36 75 nm solo cross-country flight with landings at a minimum of three airports.
Lesson 37 Review traffic pattern operations, advanced takeoff and landings, and emergency procedures.
Lesson 38 Review of basic flight maneuvers and emergency operations in preparation for final flight check.
Lesson 39 Final Flight Check conducted by HeliSat Flight Instructor. Evaluation of student's readiness for the FAA Private Pilot-Helicopter Check Flight.
